Doors Open Day: Nizhnekamskneftekhim veterans visit upgraded BTF

For many people, this trip became a real gift by the Day of Older Persons. They had worked here for over 30 years before entering retirement

As part of a celebration of the Day of Older Persons, veterans of Nizhnekamskneftekhim PJSC managed to see the Biological Treatment Facilities, which were reconstructed, first-hand. The sightseeing tour included over 30 people. The guests were told in detail how the BTF had changed in the last few years, shown treatment stages and the upgraded laboratory. Dramatic changes

A large-scale reconstruction of Nizhnekamskneftekhim PJSC began in 2016. A colossal job aimed at an integrated solution of environmental protection problems has been done here in the last three years. All the veterans who visited the Biological Treatment Facilities that day had worked here for decades before retirement.

“What a beauty! The biological facilities are unrecognisable.” Lyudmila Yefimova shared her impressions as soon as we got to the site. “I worked here for 36 years. Many thanks to the officials of Nizhnekamskneftekhim for the chance to see our workplace again.”

Director of the Water Supply, Drainage and Sewage Treatment Shop of Nizhnekamskneftekhim Mikhail Romanov took them on the excursion. He told the guests the details of all reconstruction stages. The veterans were first shown the domestic sewage mechanical treatment unit.

“The bar screen building with reception room, aerated sand traps, a pump house for faucet discharge, electrical cable scaffolding, special units designed to dispose of steam and gas mixtures. Due to hermetic and up-to-date equipment, all smelling emissions are eliminated,” director of WSD and ST shop at Nizhnekamskneftekhim Mikhail Romanov said.

No chance of unpleasant smells ending up in the air

The industrial sewage mechanical treatment reception unit also had dramatic changes. The guests saw it themselves. During the reconstruction, a reception room, a pool for polymer crumb collection with gas outlet, sand traps, a unit for removing volatile hydrocarbons and gas treatment unit appeared here. And hermetic facilities prevent unpleasant smells from ending up in the atmosphere.

During the excursion, Mikhail Romanov showed the guests the latest sand traps, which were built instead of old traps.

“Air is piped to the traps downstairs, it goes through water, highly volatile gases are removed and go to the biofilter through the pipeline,” Mikhail Romanov, the director of WSD and ST shop at Nizhnekamskneftekhim, said.

Special types of bacteria

New gas treatment units — biofilters — made a strong impression on the veterans. It is block boxes with special types of bacteria. These microorganisms remove unpleasant smells. The efficiency of gas emission treatment reaches 95%. This technology is rightly considered one of the best in Europe.

“When we were working here, such technologies didn’t exist. It is pleasant to see that the enterprise goes ahead, develops, makes big steps to improve the ecological situation in the city. The biofilter with the microorganisms is especially worthy of attention,” Nadezhda Fyodorova who had worked here for 36 years before retirement shared her impressions.

The veterans visited a laboratory with the latest equipment as well. The laboratory daily controls the quality of incoming domestic and chemically contaminated sewage, surface water and groundwater. It pays a lot of attention to the amount of microorganisms that treat water.

The guests were also said that besides the reconstruction of the BTF, Nizhnekamskneftekhim had been building a new tank for industrial sewage outside the site since March 2019. The tank will be several kilometres long.

“The new tank will allow increasing safety of sewage transportation from the industrial site to the BTF,” Mikhail Romanov, the director of WSD and ST shop at Nizhnekamskneftekhim, told the veterans.

Care for the older generation

After the excursion, the former employees of the BTF recognised that this trip became a real gift by the Day of Older Persons. In general honouring veterans is a lasting tradition for Nizhnekamskneftekhim. A big concert took place in the Nizhnekamsk Petrochemical Institute yesterday, which gathered over 500 veterans of the factory.

It should be noted that the council of war and labour veterans of Nizhnekamskneftekhim celebrated its 35th anniversary this year. Today this organisation has over 10,000 people. According to Nizhnekamskneftekhim’s collective agreement, the veterans of the Great Patriotic War and disabled people are provided with free vouchers to Shipbuilding Grove — Nizhnekamskneftekhim health resort. Besides, there is financial aid on jubilees and holidays. The older people aren’t ignored, the enterprise also comes over to them.
