Co-owner of the plant in Naberezhnye Chelny becomes adviser to the new president of the US

Ten facts about a billionaire Carl Icahn and his business in Russia

Billionaire Carl Icahn officially became an adviser on regulatory overhaul to President of the United States Donald Trump last weekend. Icahn, one of the hundred richest people in the world, according to Forbes, is known for his aggressive business practices and a breadth of business interests. His company is also actively working in Russia and even has a joint venture with KAMAZ. Though Carl Icahn has never been to Tatarstan, as Realnoe Vremya found out, and has not met with the leadership of the Russian auto giant, master skills are felt in how his corporations actively seek better conditions for themselves.

1. In the top hundred billionaires of Forbes

Carl Icahn is among the hundred richest people in the world, according to Forbes. In the world ranking in 2016, he was the 65th with a net worth of $17 billion. Annual revenue of his main company, Icahn Enterprises, is $20.6 billion

2. Poker player and ''Wolf of Wall Street''

Carl Icahn was born in 1936 in New York. Carl Icahn did boxing when he was a child. As a teenager, he became interested in poker. According to the legend spread by himself, he paid for a half of education at Princeton University on the money from poker winnings. He earned his fortune at a stock market, starting as a regular broker.

3. Corporate raider

In the business community, Carl Icahn earned the nickname of ''corporate raider'' for the aggressive business. In the 70s, Icahn began to deal with undervalued companies, using the method of greenmail. The essence of greenmail is that an entrepreneur acquires a blocking stake and becomes a member of the board of directors of the company, then he requires the other shareholders to buy his share for a higher price, threatening to hinder the work of the company or to begin a hostile takeover. At different times, the ''victims'' of Icahn became Highland Capital Corporation, Saxon Industries, Hammermill Paper Company, Marshall Fields, American Can, Dan River, Philips Petroleum, Trans World Airlines and dozens of others, including ''monsters'' such as Motorola, Dell, Xerox, Apple.

4. Two tweets of Icahn raised the value of Apple stock by almost 4%

In 2013, Icahn showed that he can manipulate the markets. ''We currently have a large position in APPLE. We believe the company to be extremely undervalued,'' he posted on Twitter. ''Had a nice conversation with Tim Cook today. Discussed my opinion that a larger buyback should be done now. We plan to speak again shortly.'' Having read the tweet, the traders rushed to buy the securities of the company. In a day, they rose by 3.8%.

5. Icahn and Trump were about to be in the court on the eve of presidential election

In 2015, Icahn publicly supported Donald Trump in the presidential race. However, earlier this year, Icahn and Trump were about to be in the court. Trump didn't like the fact that Icahn wanted to remove his name from the name of Trump Taj Mahal casino, although Trump himself back in 2009 left the board of directors of the company, and Icahn Enterprises bought it in 2015. But they decided not to bring the case to the court, and Trump's name remained in the name of the casino.

6. Carl Icahn entered the Russian market through auto parts

Icahn Enterprises owns Federal Mogul corporation, the manufacturer of auto parts. Federal Mogul was founded in the USA in 1899. Currently, the Corporation unites under its name manufacturers of parts of various brands: Abex, AE, ANCO, Atlas, Beral, Carter, Champion, DURON, Fel-Pro, Ferodo, FP Diesel, Glyco, Goetze, Moog, National, Necto, Payen, Power MAX, Precision, Raimsa, Sealed Power, Speed-Pro, Wagner Brake Products, Wagner Lighting, etc. The Corporation offers about 60.000 products. Products are manufactured at 150 factories in 25 countries. Besides, Federal Mogul has several factories in Russia.

7. Turnover of 2.2 billion rubles at KAMAZ pistons

On 10 March 2008, Federal Mogul and KAMAZ signed an agreement to establish a joint venture. The production was deployed on previously released and specially renovated area of KAMAZ-Diesel. From June 2009, it worked in the mode of commissioning.

According to the system Spark-Interfax, KAMAZ has a share of 39.4% in Federal-Mogul Naberezhnye Chelny, a share of the structures Federal Mogul — 60.6%. The company produces components of the cylinder-piston group for engines under the brand KAMAZ: pistons, piston rings, piston pins and cylinders. The authorised capital of the company as from November 2016 is 2.2 billion rubles, revenue in 2015 reached 1.1 billion rubles. In 2015, the plant for the first time received profit from sales, but after tax the company recorded a loss of 19 million rubles.

8. After Naberezhnye Chelny, Icahn went to Ulyanovsk, but ''hid'' in offshores

In 2014, Federal Mogul bought a plant of liners in the city of Dimitrovgrad, Ulyanovsk Oblast, and established Federal-Mogul Dimitrovgrad. The amount of the transaction amounted to $ 29 million. The authorised capital of the plant is more than 4.6 billion rubles, and revenue by the end of 2015 amounted to 1 billion rubles.

Unlike the subsidiary in Naberezhnye Chelny, in which the ownership structure has been disclosed, and through a chain of companies there is a direct connection with Icahn Enterprises and with Carl Icahn himself, the owners of the Ulyanovsk plant are hidden by a Cyprus offshore.

9. New Chelny plant of Icahn can obtain residency in the territory of priority development

In 2016, the structures of Icahn in Naberezhnye Chelny established another subsidiary company — Federal-Mogul Naberezhnye Chelny Metallurgy. It is one hundred percent subsidiary of Federal-Mogul Naberezhnye Chelny, the shops of which are located next to the main plant. Oleg Afanasev, director of the department of public relations of KAMAZ PJSC, has confirmed to Realnoe Vremya that the official launch of the plant is scheduled for 2017, but he could not name the exact date. The new company can become a resident of the territory of priority development and receive correspondent benefits.

10. Under the supervision of Minnikhanov

The official opening of the Federal-Mogul Naberezhnye Chelny was held on 6 October 2009 with the participation of then Prime Minister of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov and senior Vice President Federal Mogul, Rainer Jueckstock. In 2016, Minnikhanov already as President of RT visited the factory once again. With the participation of Minnikhanov, they discussed a possibility of joining Federal-Mogul Naberezhnye Chelny Metallurgy to the territory of priority development in Naberezhnye Chelny.
